Teaching Experience
I teach in the Department of Politics at Bates College and contribute cross-listed courses to the programs of Latin American Studies and Gender and Sexuality Studies. I taught for ten semesters as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Department of Political Science at the University of Kansas (KU).
At Bates College, I currently teach Gender, Power, and Politics, an introductory course on comparative gender politics, and Participatory Democracy in the Americas, an upper division seminar with a research design component. In the winter, I offer Social Movements in Latin America, an intermediate and interdisciplinary course, and Experiences in the Policy Process, an upper division community-engaged learning course on public policy. In the past, I have taught Government and Politics in Global Perspective, Politics of Latin America, The Death of Democracy?, and Race, Gender, and Sexuality in Brazil.
In May 2018, I led a group of 12 students on an off-campus course Brazil in Watercolor: Sexuality Politics in the Tropics. We explored LGBT politics and policy in Salvador da Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. See more about it on our blog!
I also advise five senior theses per year.
At the University of Kansas, as Instructor of Record, I designed and taught original courses on Contemporary US Social Movements, Women & Politics, and Introduction to Public Policy. As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, I worked with faculty and guided discussion sections for Introduction to Comparative Politics, Introduction to International Politics, and Introduction to Political Theory.
